9th Annual Boreas Pass Railroad Day
All A-B-O-A-R-D! The South Park Ranger District of the Pike National Forest invites the public to participate in a day of history, fun and camaraderie at the 9th Annual Boreas Pass Railroad Day, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004. The event commemorates the Denver, South Park and Pacific Narrow Gauge Railway from Como to Breckenridge, Colo.
Participants can travel the historic train route over Boreas Pass starting at either the Como or Breckenridge sides of the summit. There will be four stops along the route: Como Roundhouse, Rocky Point, the Section House at the Boreas Pass summit and the Rotary Snowplow Park in Breckenridge. Enjoy videos, exhibits, presentations and the opportunity to talk with local historians and authors. Among a host of other activities, this year's special events include:
- Tours of the historic Como Roundhouse
- The chance to ride a handcar on a section of restored narrow gauge tracks at Rocky Point;
- Feasting on railroad coffee and "flapjacks" at the Boreas Pass Section House; and
- The Town of Breckenridge's dedication of both their newly restored Locomotive No. 111 and a railroad Eclipse windmill at the Rotary Snowplow Park in Breckenridge. The locomotive and windmill dedication will occur in the Town of Breckenridge at 3:30 p.m.
The days activities begin at 10 a.m. and will go until 4 p.m. The public is invited to help celebrate Colorado history and to enjoy an autumn day in the Colorado rockies.
