PUEBLO, Colo., June, 30, 2006…With the big Fourth of July weekend approaching, the Pike & San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC) want visitors to realize that the fire danger remains high. Fire managers have been monitoring fuel moisture levels.
While some locations have received rain, it has been spotty and most of the area remains in a drought situation. According to Acting Forest Fire Management Officer Mike Sugaski, "The trend for the weekend is continued hot and dry weather with increasing human activity. If the winds come up, fire danger will increase."
It is a simple equation that creates a bad situation: Stressed and dead trees; drought conditions; fireworks and campfires. Fireworks are always illegal on federal public lands and Stage II fire restrictions are in place. Under Stage II, campfires are not allowed in PSICC campgrounds with the exception of Lake County in Colorado. By removing this part of the equation, visitors will be able to enjoy and protect the great outdoors.
If illegal campfires are observed, do not confront the perpetrators. You are urged to call 911 to report the offense so that law enforcement can take action. If we all work together, this will be another enjoyable holiday weekend.
