Controlled burn planned on National Forest
southeast of Pine, Colo
The US Forest Service plans to conduct a 1200-acre prescribed (area) burn near Pine, Colo., during the period Monday, Jan. 24 through mid-Feb. The burning will be completed over a number of days within that period, as environmental conditions permit.
The planned Buffalo Creek prescribed burn will occur on Pike National Forest land southeast of Pine, Colo. This low-intensity burn will reduce hazardous forest fuels that have accumulated in the Buffalo Creek fire burn area since that fire occurred in 1996. It is designed to offer protection from wildfire for the communities and subdivisions surrounding the burn area and is a continuation of intense fuels reduction and forest thinning activities the U.S. Forest service has been conducting the past two years in that general area.
The Buffalo Creek prescribed burn will occur approximately four miles southeast of Pine, Colo, on both sides of Jefferson County Road 126. Smoke from the burn will likely be visible for one to two days following burning days. U.S. Forest Service fire crews will be on the burn throughout its duration and will continue to monitor the burn area throughout the burn period.
As with all our prescribed burning activities, ignition for these burns can only take place when weather and fuels conditions are such that the fire will be of low intensity, smoke impacts to surrounding communities are minimized and the burn meets all the conditions of a burn permit approved by the Colorado State Air Pollution Control Division.
Questions regarding the status of the planned burn should be directed to the South Platte Ranger District at 303-275-5610.
