Morrison, Colo. (May 25, 2005) - Visitors to the Mount Evans Wilderness in the Pike National Forest will notice a change at several trailheads this summer. Each party will be required to register at the trailhead and to carry a copy of the registration with them during their visit. The data on visitor use and travel patterns obtained through this registration process will enable the U.S. Forest Service to address the increased use of wilderness areas and to continue to provide quality recreation experiences while at the same time protecting wilderness lands.
Growth and development across Colorado have dramatically increased the demand for recreation on the Pike & San Isabel National Forests and in the wilderness areas. Data collection is one of the first steps in determining where problems exist. To resolve wilderness management issues, public involvement and input is key in determining how the wilderness areas should be managed.
"A key element in implementing the program is that the registration process must have minimum impact on our wilderness users," according to Ralph Bradt, Pike National Forest lead wilderness ranger. "Our goal is to make this as simple and non-intrusive as possible." Previously, registration at the trailheads was voluntary; consequently data collected was insufficient to accurately assess visitor use and destinations.
To keep the process as simple as possible, visitors will be able to self-issue their registration permit at wilderness trailheads. Local wilderness users who plan multiple visits each week can either register at the trailhead or get a monthly permit at a local U.S. Forest Service office. There will be no fee charged and no limit to the number of permits issued. The registration permit will also provide information about minimum impact camping practices and wilderness regulations.
