U.S. FOREST SERVICE URGES CAUTION WITH FIRE
OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

PUEBLO, Colo, - The Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Comanche National Grassland fire managers urge vigilance with camp fires, stoves, smoking and other devices and activities that could cause wildfires over the Memorial holiday. Fire danger is very high to extreme at the lower elevations and grasslands.

"Please remember that everyone enjoying their national forests has the responsibility to prevent human-caused wildfires," said Ralph Bellah, fire prevention specialist for the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Comanche Grassland. U.S. Forest Service fire crews are trained and ready to respond to fires, whether the cause is from lightening or humans.

Recreationists will see additional patrols this weekend. Their intent is to inform visitors of camping regulations as well as enforcement. "It is critical that a camp fire never be left unattended," Bellah said. "Keep any camp fire small and be sure that it is fully out before leaving the area. Stir it with water and dirt and make certain it is cold to the touch."

Visitors can help guarantee a safe weekend. Always bring enough water to put your camp fire out. Always build camp fires in an existing camp fire ring to protect the area. If necessary, build your fire in an area surrounded by dirt and encircled by rocks. Use caution with cigarettes, charcoal grills and catalytic converters.

"We all have a role to play in preventing unwanted, human-caused fires," Bellah said. "We ask everyone visiting the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Comanche Grassland this holiday weekend to be good stewards of their public lands by practicing fire safety."

Fire managers are evaluating the need for fire restrictions throughout the summer. There are presently no fire restrictions on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Comanche National Grassland. For information, please visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/.
