A 20-year-old Denver driver took State Patrol and Park County Sheriff's officers on a high speed chase Sunday morning. Just after 8 a.m., a State Trooper and Sergeant began pursuit of a speeding motorcycle, reaching 80 mph southbound through the town of Bailey. A Park County Sheriff's deputy waited for the motorcycle near Platte Canyon High School, but was unable to stop the speeding Honda CBR Cafe Racer. Sheriff Wegener, hearing the pursuit in progress, positioned himself near mile marker 212 and tried to block and stop the bike, but the driver went around him. Wegener then joined the chase in the department's Charger.
Reaching speeds of 130 mph, the bike flew up and over Kenosha Pass and across South Park with several officers in pursuit and the Sheriff gaining on him. Two more county deputies set up a roadblock just outside of the Town of Fairplay and the driver stopped voluntarily. The stop occurred only 20 minutes from the beginning of the pursuit. No one was injured in the chase.
The driver, Spencer Childress, ran from officers because he was driving under suspension, according to Sheriff Wegener. Childress was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, felony eluding, driving under suspension, illegal passing, and driving 130 mph in 45, 55 and 65 mph zones. He was placed in custody and transported to Park County Jail.
