EXPLOSION, FIRE DESTROY HOUSE IN FAIRPLAY

Press Release and Photo: North-West Fire Protection

Main Street fire Fairplay Fairplay CO: Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, April 9 North-West Fire was called to a fully involved structure fire at 405 Main Street (Highway 9) in Fairplay. Within minutes, crews arrived and began an attack to protect the neighboring building from the spreading fire. Witnesses in the neighborhood described hearing a loud boom and then seeing the flames when they went outside to investigate what had happened. North-West Fire responded with a total of 15 firefighters and five engines.

Due to the number of buildings and propane tanks within a close proximity and the size of the fire, mutual aid was requested from Jefferson-Como, Hartsel, and Red, White & Blue Fire Districts. A total of 31 firefighters were on scene with eight engines. North-West Fire's newest engine was put in service just six days prior and performed well as the initial attack engine.

Also assisting at the scene were members of South Park Ambulance, Fairplay Police, Park County Sheriff, Fairplay Public Works, and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

The house was completely destroyed by the explosion, but, fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. Fire crews remained on scene until 3:30 a.m. to verify the fire was contained. Crews returned to the scene the following day to monitor smoldering debris. Once it has cooled enough a thorough investigation will be completed.
