Former Undersheriff Don Anthony picked up a candidate petition form from the Park County Clerk's office on Monday, April 10, 2006. Anthony hopes to secure a position on the August Republican primary ballot for the office of Park County Sheriff. Republican candidates who do not win 30% or more of the delegate vote at County Assembly are not placed on the primary ballot. If a candidate wins 10% or more of the votes, however, he or she can attempt to enter the primary by collecting petition signatures.
The number of signatures required to petition on a primary ballot is 20% of the votes received for the same office in the last primary election. For the Sheriff's election, Anthony must collect at least 152 signatures. In this case, the signatures must be those of valid Park County Republican voters.
Anthony is currently circulating the petitions and must submit the signatures by May 25, 2006, in order to qualify. If he succeeds in collecting and submitting the required number of signatures and they are validated by the Park County Clerk, Anthony will run in a primary election against his former boss, incumbent Sheriff Fred Wegener.
"The campaign is going great and I have received a lot of phone calls since the general assembly. As I told the Republican party last night, I have been humbled by the amount of support that I have received," Anthony said. "There are a lot of issues within the Sheriff's office and the citizens of Park County have the right to know the truth. These issues are what my campaign is about - lack of leadership, public trust, fiscal responsibility and accountability."
