A report of shots fired on Chickadee Lane in Burland Ranchettes outside of Bailey brought Park County Sheriff's Corporal Flint and Deputy Gaffner quickly responding to the scene. The call from dispatch originated at 11:17 pm Monday night, September 25, after two 911 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots coming from a nearby house.
Upon arriving at the residence, the officers were able to see inside a ground level bedroom where a man, later identified as 38-year-old Raymond McFayden, had several shotguns and rifles laid out on the bed and a pistol in his hand, according to Sheriff Wegener. The two officers called for "as much backup as possible," and all available officers, including the Sheriff and S.W.A.T., responded to the scene. The officers report that the suspect appeared agitated and refused to comply with their instructions.
The house was also occupied by the suspect's wife and two children at the time the incident started. The children were on the upper level of the house. His wife managed to escape from the lower level and meet arriving deputies for assistance. Flint and Gaffner entered the house and took a position guarding the bedroom from the hallway, preventing McFayden from leaving that room. This allowed the children to be rescued from the upper level of the home through a rear exit.
Flint and Gaffner engaged in negotiations with the suspect throughout the nearly two-hour standoff and eventually convinced him to surrender after getting him a cigarette. McFayden surrendered at 1:01 am and was taken into custody. Deputies DeBerry and Gaffner transported him to Fairplay. He is detained in the Park County Jail on charges of third degree assault, menacing, false imprisonment, prohibited use of a weapon, child abuse, and domestic violence. The suspect admitted to drinking beer and tequila, and also tested positive for THC, according to Sheriff Wegener.
It was later determined that the suspect had fired at least four rounds inside the house, according to the Sheriff. "The investigation is ongoing and we may find evidence of additional shots fired," Wegener said. Corporals Morgan and Flint remained at the residence until 3:31 am, processing the scene. McFayden was expected to make his first appearance in court later Tuesday afternoon.
