Child Dies in Tarryall River

June 24, 2004

Ten-year-old Deryk Williams of Wichita, KS, died after he apparently fell into the Tarryall River. The victim and his family were camping in the Box Canyon area off County Road 77 on Forest Service Road 204.

Deryk was seen fishing from a rock with family and a friend nearby. When they looked back again, he was gone. According to Park County Coroner Sharon Morris, he apparently fell from the rock or was attempting to jump between two large rocks. The water below the rocks was about 7 ft. deep and extremely turbulent, Morris said.

Park County Search and Rescue, Park County Sheriff's Deputies and Investigators, Hartsel Fire Department Dive Team, and numerous campers participated in a search and subsequent recovery of the child's body from the river.
