FAMILY AND FRIENDS REMEMBER JIM GARDNER

James Bain Morrow Gardner
February 7, 1950 ~ May 19, 2006

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 4, the South Park High School cafetorium in Fairplay overflowed with thoughts, tears, laughter, love, and fond memories of James B. Gardner. Jim was known to many in recent years as the Commissioner of District 3 in Park County. He was known to others over the decades as the good neighbor, wise friend, "Water Man", County historian, quick wit, and all-round outstanding gentleman.

While bagpipes played, friends and neighbors lined up to pay their respects. Inside the hall, attendees were greeted by the sight of the Park County Sheriff's Honor Guard standing watch over the crowd of friends and loved ones, and over the memory of the man our county lost quietly to cancer on May 19th. A giant basket of hats - Jim's collection - sat prominently on the stage. Many of the hats went home with new owners that day, honoring Jim's dedication to recycling.

Jim's widow, Amanda, graciously shared his life with the community in a large collection of photos taken through the years. His two grandsons, in Marine Dress Blues, shared their pride in and respect for their wise and memorable grandfather.

Current County Commissioners Tighe and Walker, who have served with Jim these past few years, were joined by his long-time friends and other community members in sharing their stories of Jim, both funny and poignant. Some commented that Jim would be embarrassed, but pleased, at the "grand event" in his memory.
