Bailey, Colo. - On Monday morning at 10:55 a.m., Park County deputies attempted to pick up a Harris Park resident who failed to appear for a court hearing earlier in the day. An arrest warrant had been issued for the individual. When deputies arrived at the house, they encountered the suspect who was armed with a semi-automatic pistol which he pointed at two of the deputies. The man refused to surrender to officers, according to Sheriff Fred Wegener.
Emergency medical services were paged out and staged nearby, while Sheriff Wegener, along with other personnel, responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the property. "He was outside the whole time, peeking out between the house and a shed. He continued to refuse to comply with the officers' instructions," Wegener said. After an hour-long standoff, two shots were heard from the suspect's location. Officers made their way to the suspect's location and found that he appeared to be deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Sheriff.
Final determination of cause and manner of death will be made by the Park County Coroner's office. Identification of the suspect is withheld pending notification of the family.
Update: 7:44 p.m.
The deceased suspect's family has been notified and his name has been released. He is identified as 73-year-old Harold Graham, according to Park County Coroner Sharon Morris. The autopsy will be performed in Jefferson County.
Update: June 13, 2006
According to the District Attorney's office in Fairplay, Mr. Graham was scheduled to appear Monday morning for a jury trial on two counts of failure to register as a sex offender. When Mr. Graham failed to appear for that trial, Park County District Judge Charles M. Barton issued a bench warrant for his arrest with a $500,000 bond attached. Deputies went to a residence on 104 Anderson Road in Harris Park to serve the warrant.
