U.S. Representative Joel Hefley announced on Thursday that he will not be running for re-election in 2006. The 70-year-old Congressman representing the 5th District, which includes most of Park County, has decided that this is the time for a career change.
The decision comes after reports that the White House and others asked Hefley not to retire this year. "I have received a great deal of encouragement to run again and I appreciate that support, but the timing seems right to move on to other opportunities," the 10-term Congressman said.
Hefley wanted to stay in Congress until the military base closure issues were settled. That process was completed last year, presenting him with the retirement decision he has been considering ever since.
"This decision has not been easy to make. I like my job and it is an enormous honor and privilege to represent the people of the 5th District of Colorado. I look forward to continuing to work hard for the people of the 5th District throughout this year and wish my successor the same satisfaction I have received from this job," Hefley said.
Campaigning to succeed Hefley is former El Paso County Sheriff and Republican John Wesley Anderson, who announced his intent to seek the office in January. Democrat Jay Fawcett is also running to represent the 5th District in Congress.
