Skeletal remains recovered from a hillside above Harris Park on Thursday, May 6, have been positively identified as those of Jerome Swanson of Harris Park. Swanson was identified by analysis of dental records according to Park
County Coroner Sharon Morris. Personal items and clothing found in the area
also matched those described by family and friends as belonging to Swanson.
Swanson disappeared more than six years ago, on April 27, 1998 and was reported missing by his parents two days later. He was 18 years old when he disappeared.
Colorado Bureau of Investigation crime scene technicians coordinated the
recovery effort that included three personnel from the Coroners Office,
Deputy DA Dave Thorsen, DA Investigator Betty Royse, Detective Sven
Bonnelycke and Sheriff Fred Wegener.
Trauma to the remains is consistent with a gunshot wound, which appears to be the cause of death. Manner of death decisions will be made after completion of the anthropological examination.
Updated after examination:
Based on evidence found at the scene and examination by a forensic anthropologist, Jerome Swanson's death has been ruled a suicide, according to Park County Coroner Sharon Morris.
Swanson's parents Terri and Tom Swanson were notified of the find by Morris.
Morris said the family had always hoped that Swanson had run away from home
but was still alive.
Evergreen Memorial will handle funeral arrangements for the family.
