...................................................................

LeRoy H. "Roy" Nelson, 86, former "mayor" of Shawnee, passed away October 3, 2007 at Littleton Adventist Hospital. He was born January 19, 1921 to Frank and Laura Nelson in Denver, Colorado, and spent 50 years working as a plumber. The Shawnee Post Office, Trading Post and Apartments were purchased in 1978 and he and his wife moved there in 1979. After retirement, he opened the store at 7 a.m. each morning so school children could wait for the bus inside where it was warm. Later in the morning, whoever stopped for their mail would also step into the store for prepared coffee and sweets. Roy claimed to get up at 4 a.m. each day to bake the donuts, etc., even though the box said, "Dolly Madison." Many men his age appeared each day and formed the "Liars and BSRs" club, which is functioning to this day.

Roy was married in 1943 to Dorothy Tofall and divorced in 1967. He is survived by a daughter, Judy Pearson, a granddaughter, April and 3 great-grandchildren all of Denver. Roy married Leona Peterson in 1967 and is survived by his wife, 4 step-children, Larry Peterson, California, Jeanne Manning, Aurora, Michael Peterson, Fairplay and Marcia McGarvey, Littleton, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Roy lived his life like the poem, "The House by the Side of the Road" by Sam Walter Foss, which states: "----Let me live in a house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by - The men who are good and the men who are bad, As good and as bad as I. I would not sit in the scorner's seat, Or hurl the cynic's ban - Let me live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man."

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct.20, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shawnee Community Center Bailey Farmer's Union *, followed by a potluck lunch. In lieu of flowers, Roy requested that donations go to one of the following:
