Bailey, Colo. - The Park County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at the home of Gary Wright on Forest Drive near Bailey at approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, according to Park County Undersheriff Monte Gore.
The Sheriff's Office press release states that they were acting on information received from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The information indicated that Wright was possibly in possession of illegal firearms, and was possibly running guns. ATF began an investigation after Gary Wright's son, Michael, was arrested in Nebraska earlier in the week. Michael Wright was reportedly traveling to Michigan carrying a load of stolen firearms, according to the Undersheriff.
The Sheriff's Department says that Wright initially armed himself with a rifle when officers approached his residence on Thursday. Deputies backed off and telephoned him in his residence and were able to talk him into coming outside. Mr. Wright was detained at the scene. He was later charged with possession of less than 1 oz. of marijuana and released on summons.
Investigators confiscated 30 firearms consisting of rifles, handguns and shotguns. A determination will be made as to whether or not the firearms were modified or are illegal.
Due to the serious nature of the allegations, the Undersheriff adds, the department considered this to be a high risk warrant service. The Sheriff's Office took precautions by using their S.W.A.T. team to execute the warrant, according to Gore. "I'm proud of the deputies and the way they handled this situation," Gore said. "They acted professionally and used good judgment in executing this search warrant. We are glad no one was hurt."
