Supplement to Park County Bulletin Election 2008

Doug Tamminga

for County Commissioner District 1

Park County, Colorado

          The Leader --

Earns lasting respect, disregarding shallow, shifting and fickle popularity

Expects accountability and responsibility from others and offers the same by example

Takes deserved credit and blame in the same even stride without arrogance or fear

Avoids shaky positions of undue influence by standing firm on the stable ground of principle

Understands that Leadership is a quality of strength, not a commodity bought and sold

Knows that a lofty title is of less value than honest accomplishment

Park County Needs Strong Leadership Now

Here are some of the ideas a LEADER can promote in Park County --

Treat employees and citizens as assets, not liabilities to be "provided for"

Employees are professionals who, if given a chance, will share ideas on how they can work smarter, not harder.

Citizens are or have been in the work force in positions from laborer to corporate leader. With encouragement, they will become part of the solutions leading to a better Park County.

Exercise fiscal responsibility

It is the fiduciary responsibility to spend county tax funds for the benefit of the citizens. County officials are trustees of county funds, not the owners of those funds.

Look outside the county citizens for more funding when necessary. Many of our county grant programs have been very successful. Build on those successes, get Park County's name into the grant hopper, and project our needs outside the county.

Be willing to take calculated risks

Be willing to look at new ways of doing things. The same old way of doing business is easy; it is the path of least resistance.

Rely on experience to know what has been tried so time and energy can be spent on new, productive ideas.

Make the government experience more accessible

Make more and more available on the county webiste. Online permitting and more departments using credit/debit card payments are just two ideas to make dealing with the county easier. Long distances and high gas prices make these steps necessary.

Make the government experience friendlier

Promote business growth by making the process easier. Follow the Land Use Regulations, promote code enforcement, repeal overly restrictive rules.
